āļøWhy am I singing off key?
š¦»Tone Deaf
Being tone-deaf, also known as amusia, is a condition in which a person has difficulty recognizing or reproducing musical tones.
While some people with amusia may be able to sing in tune to some extent, others may have difficulty reproducing or distinguishing between musical pitches at all.
It's not possible to "win" amusia. Amusia is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by difficulty processing musical information, and it is typically permanent.
However, some individuals with amusia can benefit from therapy and training to improve their musical skills to a certain extent.
A person who is truly tone-deaf may be able to learn to sing in a limited way, but it would be difficult for them to sing with perfect pitch. They may also have difficulty singing harmonies or different melodies.
It's also important to note that many people believe they are tone-deaf when they are not, and that most people can improve their ability to sing in tune with training and practice.
If you are having difficulty singing in tune, pass this simple tone-deafness test:
If you canāt say if sound the same or different, my sincerely condolences. Youāre in my league. But still you can move forward.
With dedication and modern tools you can sing the song.
However, it will take more time to do it. Are you brave enough to continue?
šOther reasons
There are also other reasons why you still canāt sing in tune:
- Pitch perception: Difficulty in accurately perceiving the correct pitch or melody of a song.
- Poor Ear Training: Lack of practice in recognizing and matching pitch can lead to off-key singing.
- Breath Control: Improper breathing technique can affect the stability and accuracy of pitch.
- Muscle Tension: Tension in the neck, jaw, and face can negatively impact pitch.
- Poor Vocal Technique: Improper use of the diaphragm, larynx, or tongue can cause pitch problems.
- Nervousness or Stress: Being nervous or stressed can affect your singing, causing you to sing flat or sharp.
š¼Music Theory Basics
I found that many people do not understand what it actually means to sing in tune.
How it works under the hood? I will do my best to provide you the simple explanation.
Forgot all the sheet music notation! You donāt need to waste years to learn classic music theory.
I will explain everything in simple words. It will be enough to sing your favorite songs.
Letās move out emotions, power of voice, tone and other thingsā¦
The singing is just moving voice up and down to match the required note at right time.
Letās looks at piano in the vertical view:
The bottom keys produce lowest sound to higher sound. Each button increase itās high for a half a tone. Some of notes when played together sounds good, some bad.
ā ļø Important note: Human voice can produce only one note in one period of time.
Thatās it. From technical side it is everything you need to know.
To see it in practice, just download the Nail the Pitch application.
Itās absolutely free for use and try to sing anything:
You will see the piano in the vertical view and actually understand how it works.
Now when you see the note, the goal is to sing it š
šļøFind your place to sing
Why this is important? Because you need the place where you can express emotions and donāt shy to disturb anyone with your not so perfect pitching.
Some examples:
- Car
- Garage
- Dedicated room
- Vocal cabine
Without place where you free to sing and learn on your mistakes it will be hard to stay motivated.
š§Use headphones
Use good headphones when practicing singing, it will help you to inject notes to your head.
šFind your range
Obviously, you canāt hit all musical notes by voice. Some are either very low or very high for you.
Men usually have lower voice than women.
You can expand your range with specific exercises and practice.
Letās imagine that you want to sing Maroon 5 - Sugar but your voice is baritone. Without practice you canāt do it.
So⦠letās focus on notes that you can already sing.
Because you can hit them much easier.
You can identify your vocal range by singing different notes and finding the highest and lowest ones you can comfortably produce. Here are some steps to help:
- Warm up your voice by humming or singing simple scales.
- Start with a comfortable pitch in your middle range and gradually sing higher until you reach the highest note you can comfortably produce. Make a note of this pitch.
- Repeat the process, but this time sing lower notes until you reach the lowest pitch you can comfortably produce.
- The range between the highest and lowest notes you can produce is your vocal range.
Here is good free service that help you determine range automatically:
šPosture
Posture is important for singing because it helps with breathing, support, and tone production.
Good posture allows for proper alignment of the diaphragm and rib cage, enabling the singer to take in more air and produce a full, resonant sound.
It also helps to prevent tension in the neck, back, and throat that can negatively impact singing technique and performance.
Good posture also projects confidence and helps the singer connect with their audience.
To simplify⦠just stay straight :)
š Warm Up
Warming up is important for singing because it helps prepare the voice for performance.
A proper warm-up can improve tone, range, and overall vocal control.
It also helps to prevent strain and injury by gradually increasing blood flow and flexibility in the vocal cords.
A warm-up can also help build confidence and focus, setting the stage for a successful performance.
I definitely recommend to do some humming before we start.
But again, donāt waste much time for this right now. Letās focus on the main target!
1ļøā£Sing in Tune Just One Note
To sing your first note, open Nail the Pitch App
Now you need to produce any note from your range.
You can do it on guitar, piano.
If you donāt have any instrument you can open piano on the laptop, for example:
Play note on piano, see that it appeared in Nail the Pitch App
Now use voice to reach this note. Play the note repeatedly on piano.
Try to hold the note by voice for several seconds. First time it will be hard.
But when itās done, you will feel vibration.
Congratulations! You reached your first note in tune :)
šāāļøHear the note in your head
This skill of imagining music in your head is called āaudiationā is powerful for singing: it connects hearing music with singing it.
You hear, then you imagine hearing, then you sing.
Most people often miss the step of imagination.
š£ļøSing intervals
Intervals it is the distance between two musical notes.
Intervals are used to build melodies and chords in music, and they play a crucial role in determining the harmony and structure of a song.
When singing intervals, the goal is to sing the two notes in tune, paying attention to the distance between them and matching the pitch accurately.
Intervals can range from a simple whole step to a complex compound interval, and practicing singing intervals is a valuable exercise for improving one's ear training, pitch accuracy, and overall vocal skills.
Use available music applications to sing intervals, for example:
š¤Choose Your Favorite song
Now itās time to real singing experience.
Why waste much time learning intervals if you can practice with real intervals used in the song you like.
The melody of each song is built with intervals.
Now when you trained some interval, time to learn the song you want to sing.
Choose one song that you like and you really want to sing.
āStay focused
I know you want to sing many songs, but stick to the one you chose!
š½Extract the melody
Isolate the vocal from the song.
The available methods are:
- Open Youtube and search āacapella {name of your song}ā, for example āacapella linkin park in the endā
- If there are no acapella available, use tool to extract vocal. For example, lalal.ai
It is extracting vocals from songs and isolate them in real-time.
šAnalyze the melody
Listen to the melody repeatedly: The more you listen to a melody, the more familiar it will become.
Try to listen to the melody as much as possible, and try to focus on the specific notes and rhythms.
Advanced tip is to learn the melody on piano.
Do not worry, you donāt need complex chords or skills to play piano.
All you need is only one finger on your right hand.
š¾Memorize the melody
Here is interesting research was made by my good friend and vocal coach.
She visited phoniatric to check how vocal cords works.
And the interesting thing, when you imagine melody in your head, cords start moving automatically.
When you imagine note in your head, the brain moving vocal cords to correct position.
And your brain is a key to sing in tune!
Listen to the note carefully and try to āpictureā the note in your mind.
Try to create some associations between notes.
Use visualization: Try to visualize the melody in your mind, as if you are playing it on an instrument. Imagine the notes on a musical staff and try to see the intervals between them.
Try to associate the melody with something that you can easily remember, such as a story or a poem.
Try to understand the structure and the harmony of the melody.
Understanding the structure and the harmony of a melody can make it easier to memorize, because it gives a sense of direction and context. Use pencil and draw the melody on piece of paper.
š§āš«Learn melody by pieces
All songs has a structure and in popular music it is usually verse - chorus - verse -chorus - bridge - chorus.
Learn chorus first, then verse. Or start with verse, it is totally up to you.
- Write down melody
- Write down lyrics
- Break the melody down into smaller sections
Instead of trying to memorize the entire melody at once, try breaking it down into smaller sections. Practice each section separately until you have it memorized, then move on to the next section.
It may take hours and days for the first time, take breaks. But after that you will be rewarded!
š¤Sing! Sing! Sing!
Remember that singing in tune takes practice and patience, so be kind to yourself and don't get discouraged if you don't see improvement right away.
If you will not sing, youāll never start sing in tune.
Sing in car when you go to work.
Sing at home.
Find your place where you donāt be shy and can express emotions!
Sing with vocal only
Remember, you have acapella
Sing with vocal and music
Sing song with music and vocal
Sing without vocal
Once you confident and sing perfectly this song, try to sing this song without original vocal.
āŗļøRecord yourself
Record yourself to listen and make corrections.
Show the record to vocal coach (online/offline) to show you mistakes and he suggest how to improve them.
šØāšTake lessons
Now, when you know the melody and can sing it in tune you can go to vocal coach and he will detect the areas for improvement.
A singing teacher can work with you to identify any specific issues you have with pitch and give you exercises to help you improve.
𤯠did every step from this guide and still canāt sing in tune. What to do?
